Digital photos should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots or pixels per inch) at 4x6 inches or larger. Many digital photos sent to Horse Illustrated are low resolution (72 dpi) and cannot be used. A low-resolution photo may look fine on your computer screen, but it won’t reproduce well on a magazine page.
To capture a digital images at the appropriate resolution, you must use at least a 3.2 megapixel camera with the resolution set on large and the compression or quality set on superfine. Taking a photo at low resolution and then increasing the file size in a photo-management program, such as PhotoShop won’t work: the photos must actually be shot at the highest resolution.
We can work from JPEG or TIFF files; bitmap (.bmp) files are not usable in print for the magazine.
