Forage

Good nutrition and health start with quality forage. A typical 1,000-pound horse should eat about 15 to 20 pounds of good-quality forage daily. What constitutes good quality? Forage that is:

• Green and leafy (high proportion of leaves to stems)

• About 9 - 15 percent protein

• Free of poisonous plants, blister beetles, weeds, dust and mold
